Tooth Topics
Are Your Teeth Eroding?
Tooth erosion is the breakdown of tooth structure caused when acid eats through dental enamel – the thin outer layer that helps prevent decay.Where does the acid come from? Soft drinks and other foods that have a low ph value such as fruit juices, pickles, fresh fruit and yogurt.
According to a recent survey of Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) members, tooth erosion is increasing. To maintain your dental health, it’s a good idea to limit consumption of soft drinks, eat low ph foods inmoderation and to brush frequently.
Tooth Decay INCREASING in Children
It may surprise you that – over the last few years – we’ve seen a dramatic increase in child tooth decay. Why? Here’s my theory.
Since the 1960s – with fluoridation of water and better education about dental health – children’s tooth decay plummeted. Assuming the situation was ‘under control,’ we parents grew lax in regulating our children’s candy consumption. Candy – in all forms – is still detrimental to healthy teeth.
In addition, drinking bottled water is now a common practice, but it doesn’t contain fluoride.
A new product, M1 Paste, helps compensate for reduced fluoride intake. It combines calcium, phosphate and fluoride to help prevent decay. The next time you visit us, ask if you think you might be a candidate for MI Paste.
Wishing you and yours all the hope and happiness of the season!
